In April 2020 Rabbi Akiva Weingarten founded the Besht Yeshiva Dresden association with the aim of giving Jewish dropouts from ultra-Orthodox communities the opportunity to live their Jewish life in a liberal way and to pass on their deep traditional knowledge.
Rabbi Akiva Weingarten, an ex-Satmarer from New York, used his experience as a so-called "OTD" (someone who is off the ultra-orthodox path) to help other dropouts find a new way for themselves. The Yeshiva is open to everyone and offers Talmudic lessons as well as Hebrew courses.
Thus, Jewish life in Dresden should become visible and self-evident again. Besht is an acronym of the name of the founder of the Hasidic movement Rabbi Israel Baal Shem Tov (1700-1760).
